In honor of Black History Month, McGill fourth graders put on a performance of Anansi and the Pot of Beans, featuring Anansi, a naughty spider, and his animal friends. In this African folktale, Anansi learns a valuable lesson on patience, responsibility, and trust. Embedded in the play, students sing a South African freedom song, "Siyahamb’ ekukhanyen’ kwen khos", which translates to "We are marching in the light of Truth".
There was an air of anticipation before the performance:
Then we were off an running with the story of Anansi, the trickster of Ghanaian folklore, and how spiders lost their hair:
Finally, we had our usual question-and-answer session with the cast and crew:
Special thanks to the team of professionals who helped with the production; Ms Yoo, our 4th Grade teacher, Ms Manglicmot, our Match Coach, and Ms Villa, the 4th Grade paraprofessional:
Ms Yoo will soon be out on leave, and present at the performance was a new teacher who will fill in while she's gone, Ms Sanchez:
